July 10, 2009 Things the Pope Doesn't Like: Poverty, Injustice, IP Lawyers Maybe intellectual property lawyers should worry about facing summary judgment in a higher court than they're used to.

An encyclical letter dated last week expresses some of Pope Benedict XVI's thoughts on the modern world; it's not a pronouncement of church law, more akin to thinking out loud about the problems the pontiff sees confronting the church and the world. One of those problems is IP lawyers. Pulling the relevant quote from the blog Knowledge Ecology Notes:

"On the part of rich countries there is excessive zeal for protecting knowledge through an unduly rigid assertion of the right to intellectual property, especially in the field of health care."

So while the Protestant Reformation wasn't exactly popular in the Vatican, apparently patent reformation has one seriously high-profile advocate there.

Until the Catholic Church reforms its own attitudes toward responsible birth control, a direct cause for many of the problems of the world, the Pope's words have little sway with me; i.e., the Pope should avoid throwing stones in his glass house.
I agree that it is by no means self-evident that patents encourage an increased absolute quantity of professional resume research expenditures
The patent system then has the further effect of artificially stimulating research expenditures in the patentable areas, while artificially restricting research in the nonpatentable areas. netbook hp mini

Business owners everywhere are faced with the difficult task of keeping the company afloat during this economic downturn. An obvious first step to fiscal responsibility is to reduce costs any way possible. You may be tempted to slash spending across the board, but you should be aware of experts in the field have determined that scrimping on your advertising budget during difficult economic times is not necessarily WISEST line of conduct. In some circumstances it may even economic sense to increase your spending on advertising for your business.
While I don'g agree with everything you wrote I do agree on a large portion of it, I think its time we take a 2nd look at our patent laws and the process that is used to enforce them.
