Against Monopoly

A nice post by the Economic Logician (well I think it's nice since he's nice to us).

Have you noticed how the grip on intellectual property law keeps expanding: copyright periods lengthen, the scope of patentable "innovations" widens, and the enforcement of intellectual property become the topic of international trade negotiations. But should we expect this?

The post is here.

Regretfully, one can say that this is an unfortunate aspect of our "entitlement culture". As the law expands, those who benefit by the law believe that they have ever greater rights that must be protected. Like a drug addict who needs an increasing fix to maintain their "high", the content creators require an ever greater legal "entitlement" for their invented rights to prevent the the misuse of their so-called intellectual property.

You may have an interest at looking at this discussion: fair use of characters in a script. The aggrandizement of copyright was not viewed by some as an expansion of a property right, but as valid recognition of the need to protect the creators so-called intellectual property.
