backResisting IP monopoly As I have increased my understanding of IP law and pondered the success of IP owners in expanding their monopoly interests, I have come increasingly to wonder if a more effective way of fighting back can be found. Advocacy is obviously important in increasing public understanding and I think that it has had some success, as for example, in getting the Patent Office to revise its procedures for vetting patent applications link here. Another track has now been suggested by a suit against the RIAA whose misbehavior has prompted a victim to seek to get her suit granted class-action status, potentially multiplying the cost for the offender link here. Still another avenue emerged when I encountered the story of a youngster who taped a few seconds of a feature film, was prosecuted, and got the movie chain boycotted link here.
Anybody else have more ideas of how to fight back? [Posted at 08/20/2007 07:21 PM by John Bennett on Against Monopoly Comments The third link in this article is wrong. It's a copy of the second link and as a result leads to the class action suit story rather than the boycott story. [Comment at 08/21/2007 06:39 PM by None of your beeswax] The link has not been corrected in nearly a week. Why was my first comment incorrectly ignored? [Comment at 08/27/2007 10:12 AM by None of your beeswax] I checked the link: it refers to http://consumerist.com/consumer/fair-use/
regal-cinemas-facing-boycott-after-pressing-charges-again-teen-pirate-287405.php which appears to be correct. [Comment at 08/27/2007 01:08 PM by David K. Levine] It does now, but it didn't yesterday or on the 21st. On those days it definitely pointed to http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/08/17/1728225 -- same place as the second link. [Comment at 08/28/2007 01:27 PM by None of your beeswax] None of your beeswax is right--I had corrected the link between the time I became aware of the problem and David's response. I didn't see Beeswax posts earlier--too much going on. Sorry. One suspicion I have of the possible problem--I thought I entered the right URL but may have used a "tiny URL" and that may have expired, though I am not certain.
